The Bears shocked the football world last season when they traded for Jay Cutler. The price tag was high, but the Bears did something that took a lot of guts. While the team’s record was not strong last season and Cutler appeared to enjoy throwing the ball to the other team, he did show some strong moments as the Bear’s QB and provides some hope coming into this season.

Lets start with some good thoughts…

Cutler really did not have an established wide receiver until Devin Aromishodu began seeing considerable playing time. Aromishodu proved he could get open and make nice catches. While other guys had moments, none really established much for the team. Going into this season, the Bears brought in a top offensive coordinator in Mike Martz who has said on numerous occasions that he loves his group of wide receivers. Martz has always been a straight shooter, so as an optimistic guy, I really want to believe him. Lets hope the Bears shore up the offensive line, because Cutler could have a great year if Martz is correct.

Now with the bad thoughts…

Who in the h…e….double hockey sticks is going to block for Cutler? The Bears offensive line reminded me of CTU on this year’s 24. Unless things improve, Cutler will enjoy the taste of bad Soldier Field sod. As much as I am drinking the Mike Martz Kool Aid, I am not sure if I agree with his assessment of the wide receivers.

I am done now…anyone else have any thoughts???

Without any picks in the first two rounds, it was up to the Chicago Bears front office to find value later in the draft. And from this vantage point, they did. I love when teams draft guys that are productive football players, and the Bears did just that with at least three of the picks. Major Wright in the third round was one of the players that Bears had earmarked (and the last safety according to Jerry Angelo). Here is a guy that was a strong defensive player on a good defense at Florida. I like the idea of getting someone in here that can really help the team right away. They feel Wright can do that and to the Bears credit, they have been strong drafting safeties in the later rounds. In the fourth round, the Bears got a guy in Corey Wooten out of Northwestern that might be one of the steals in the draft. He was projected to be a second round pick by many experts, and in his previous season may have been a first round pick until he injured his knee in an Alamo Bowl loss to Missouri. That being said, he still managed a solid campaign at Northwestern last season and may be someone that can really develop back to his old form. Look, he was a fourth round pick, so if it does not work out the Bears really did not lose anything. The Bears surprised many experts by drafting corner back Josh Moore from Kansas State. He was a very good corner back at K State and the Bears loved his energy during a workout. In the six round, the Bears took quarterback Dan LeFevour out of Central Michigan and a local kid from Downers Grove. Take productive players and good things can happen. Here is a guy that was productive in college but questions about his talent came when he refused to throw at the combine. But again, remember that this was a late pick and someone the Bears are rolling the dice with. With the last pick of the Bears, they took J’Marcus Webb out of West Texas A & M. He was able to chip current offensive line coach Mike Tice’s tooth, so that might have led to this pick. In the seventh round, you just hope and pray.

With a strong free agency period and some value in the draft, the Bears brought in some talent. In the secondary free agent market the Bears are hoping to fill some needs on the offensive line.
